Huawei G520 outed as an inexpensive, quad-core smartphone for China

Image
Huawei put its  best foot forward  ( twice ) last week at CES, but it seems that the company has yet another smartphone up its sleeve: a 4.5-inch Android device known as the G520. According to  Gizchina , the phone is said to wield a quad-core 1.2GHz Mediatek  MT6589 , but its key selling point will be the price -- it's said to be in the neighborhood of ¥1,399 ($225). The specific resolution of the G520 is currently known, and the same is true for the version of Android it'll ship with. That said, Ice Cream Sandwich seems most plausible, as the smartphone includes just 512MB of RAM. The Huawei G520 also includes a 5-megapixel rear camera and is said to go up for sale on January 21st within China. Hopefully by then, we'll know a bit more about this one.

Samsung ‘confirms’ Galaxy S IV screen size

The recently-concluded Consumer Electronic Show held in Las Vegas saw  Samsung  boasting of latest in TV technology: TV which 'kills' remote, curved TVs and lots of other  exciting  innovations it plans to bring to the space. However, the company had little to offer to its smartphone lovers.  However, a closer inspection of Samsung's booth at CES reveals that the company inadvertently gave away the screen size and other details of the display it plans to use in its upcoming smartphone  Samsung Galaxy S IV .  A report on technology blog AnadTech says that a section at Samsung's booth had a listing showing the evolution of the AMOLED displays developed by the company. Not only did this include the screens used in the flagship devices like Galaxy S, S II and S III, but also the one widely expected to be used in the upcoming Galaxy S IV.  According to the report, Galaxy S IV will feature a 4.99-inch SuperAMOLED display that has 440ppi pixel density and can handle Full HD

Now, flexible 'paper tablet' that can be rolled up

Researchers have developed a revolutionary tablet screen as thin as a sheet of paper that can be twisted and dropped without damage - and it could replace your laptop within five years.  Developed by Queen's University in  Canada  in collaboration with  Plastic Logic  and  Intel  Labs, it could lead to revolutionary new gadgets that are virtually unbreakable - and as thin as a piece of paper.  The PaperTab is fully interactive with a flexible, high-resolution 10.7-inch plastic display developed by Plastic Logic, a flexible touchscreen, and powered by the second generation  Intel CoreTM i5 Processor , the 'Daily Mail' reported.  "Plastic Logic's flexible plastic displays allow a natural human interaction with electronic paper, being lighter, thinner and more robust compared with today's standard glass-based displays," said Indro Mukerjee, CEO of Plastic Logic.  Researchers plan to launch the screen later this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in  Las Ve

Lenovo announces the IdeaPad Yoga 11S

Image
Lenovo announces the IdeaPad Yoga 11S with Ivy Bridge, Windows 8; arrives in June for $799+ That headline says it all, doesn't it? The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S is like the   Yoga 11 , except instead of an ARM chip, it has a laptop-grade Ivy Bridge processor. That means it's more powerful, of course, but more importantly, since this is an x86 system it runs full Windows 8 instead of Windows RT. Hello, legacy application support! As a full-fledged PC, the 11S also steps up to a higher-quality display: a 1,600 x 900 IPS screen, compared with a 1,366 x 768 LCD on the Yoga 11. Other than that, this has fundamentally the same design as the other Yoga laptops, which is to say its screen can fold all the way around into tablet mode (with in-between options, like Tent and Stand modes). As you can see in those press shots, it has the same look and feel, too, including a soft-touch finish and a relatively cushy keyboard. As you'd imagine, though, it's a bit heftier than

Lenovo to launch 27-inch 'interpersonal computer'

Dismayed that family members are spread out over the house, each with a separate PC or tablet? Lenovo has something it believes will get them back together: a PC the size of a coffee table that works like a gigantic  tablet  and lets four people use it at once. Lenovo Group , one of the world's largest PC makers, is calling the IdeaCentre Horizon  Table PC  the first "interpersonal computer" - as opposed to a "personal computer." At first glance, it looks like a regular all-in-one machine in the vein of the iMac: It's a 27-inch screen with the innards of a  Windows 8  computer built into it, and it can stand up on a table. But you can pick it up off the table, unhook the power cord and lay it flat for games of "Monopoly." It's big enough to fit four people around it, and the screen can respond to ten fingers touching it at the same time. As a tablet, it's a monstrosity. The screen is the size of eight  iPads  stitched together, and it wei

Soon, smartphone app to open cars doors

Researchers have developed a new software that makes the technology of opening car and home doors using  smartphone apps more secure and versatile. Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology  SIT  in Darmstadt, Germany, will be demonstrating their ShareKey software, a solution to popularise the method. "In essence, ShareKey offers two new functions: users can issue digital keys remotely and assign these keys certain user permissions. For instance, I can grant the building superintendent access to my apartment for a short period so that he can open the door for the gas metre to be read while I'm at work," said Alexandra Dmitrienko from the SIT. "The solution is built around modern security technologies and can be easily integrated into existing access control systems," Dmitrienko said in a statement. ShareKey sends electronic keys directly to the user's mobile phone, in the form of a QR code attached to an e-mail or MMS. "
