Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos: 5 misses
Samsung recently unwrapped its latest phone in the Indian market - Galaxy Grand Duos, a phablet with a reasonable price tag. The new smartphone has dual-sim capability with high-end smartphone features, latest version of Android OS and some apps found only in Samsung's top-end devices. However, the all-new Galaxy Grand Duos also lacks a few features which may negatively impact many prospective buyers purchase decision.
Here is a look at five such misses... and a quick comparison with its closest rival Micromax A116 Canvas HD!
While it unlikely that Canvas HD's 1.2GHz quad-core by MediaTek will offer the same computing power of Galaxy S III, it should be able to match the processing capability of Galaxy Grand Duos' 1.2GHz dual-core chip. Of course, a price tag that will be at least Rs 6,500 lesser than Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos' helps Micromax Canvas HD's cause too.

Poor screen quality
Size isn't everything. Samsung's Galaxy Grand Duos proves that.its 5-inch screen, its key selling point, also figures among our list of misses. The screen has a display resolution of just 800x480p and pixel density of 187ppi, which will affect your viewing and browsing experience by a considerable margin.
Rich videos shot at 1080p will be toned down to match the screen resolution of the Galaxy Grand Duos, ruining the HD viewing experience for many. The same will go for graphics-heavy games. Not a great thing to contend with specially when Micromax's just-launched Canvas HD dual-sim smartphone at approximately Rs 15,000 offers a better resolution.
Internal storage
With just 8GB of internal storage, Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos fails to meet our expectation. Considering that the five-incher will be the favourite of many for watching videos and movies on the go, just 8GB storage (wherein just 5GB is available to users), makes it a must for users to spend on a microSD card to make up for the lack of in-built storage.
RAM
Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos comes with a standard configuration of 1GB RAM. However, this makes the device vulnerable to future software updates, since they eat up the RAM and leave even lesser space for apps, resulting in frequent hanging of phones. It comes as no surprise that most new devices have 2GB of RAM. Therefore, lack of adequate RAM will prick Galaxy Grand Duos buyers sooner or later.
Battery
Galaxy Grand Duos packs a 2,100mAh battery, which seems quite insufficient, on paper at least. Considering the device's screen size and processor will require a lot of power to run all the stuff packed in, it is unlikely that this battery will last one full day on a single charge.
Stale Look
Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos is the first phone to be launched by the company in 2013, but it has continued with the same design theme it introduced in May last year. The manufacturer used different design languages for its Galaxy S, S II and S III smartphones and is likely to introduce a new one for Galaxy S IV. Therefore, buyers will be stuck with a phone having a stale look in just a few months.
